How to Discreetly Measure Your Partner's Ring Size

You've decided you want to propose and you've chosen the perfect engagement ring. Congratulations! But before you start planning on where you're going to pop the question, you need to get the ring size right. You don't want to ruin the big surprise by asking them their ring size. But get it wrong and one of the most romantic days of your life could be tainted.

Follow our tips and discover what your partner's ring size is without them knowing.

Measure one of their rings

Measure one of their rings

If they usually wear a ring on their fourth (ring) finger, wait until they take it off and measure it. If they're only going to take it off for a couple of minutes, quickly place it on a piece of paper, draw a circle around it, and return the ring so they're none the wiser.

But if they're taking it off to shower or workout and you've got some extra time, there is a way you can get a more accurate measurement. Download and print off our ring sizer and use it to get a solid idea of their ring size.

Borrow one of their rings

One of the best ways of getting an accurate measurement is to take a ring they usually wear on their fourth finger and place it on our ring sizer. Or, even better, bring it along to our showroom and let us measure it for you.

You have to be careful with this method. You need to choose a ring that you know goes on the correct finger but is one they don't wear very often. If you choose a ring they wear every day, they'll think they've lost it or it's been stolen.

Ask their friends

Ask their friends

There's a possibility that your partner's friends know what their ring size is. Maybe they've been shopping together before or maybe they've swapped rings to see what they'd look like on each other's hand. Even if your friend doesn't know your partner's ring size, they may be able to ask them subtly without rousing suspicion.

Ask their sibling

Ask their sibling

If your partner has a sibling of a similar size, there's a good chance they've got similar size ring fingers. Swear their sibling to secrecy then ask them what their ring size is. You could even take them ring shopping with you to make sure the ring you're thinking about buying is a good fit.

Go with a popular size

Go with a popular size

If you really have no idea at all and you've exhausted all your options, your best bet is to go with one of the most popular ring sizes. For women, 'M' is the most popular ring size for the fourth finger. If your partner has particularly thin fingers, they could be a 'J'. Or if they've got particularly large fingers, they could be a 'Q'. For men, the average ring size for the fourth finger is 'T'.

Don't worry about it

If you can't wait to propose and you don't want to go through the hassle of measuring your partner's ring size, don't bother about it. Go with your gut and take a guess at their size. If you get it wrong, we'll resize it for free as long as you return it within 90 days.
